The Maharashtra State Grape Growers Association was formed by Late Annasabeb Shembekar inspired by Late Vasantrao Naik, the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra and major contribution by Late Shri. Raobahadur Borawake.

Grape Cultivation: The seeded grape varieties were cultivated in Nashik, Sangli, Tasgaon and Solapur area.

Cultivation Practices: Fruit pruning of seeded grape varieties at 10 to 12 buds on cane and for Thompson seedless it was at 8 to 12 buds. Prunned vines were twisted on the wires. Use of GA was restricted to Thompson seedless only. After 50% capfall a dip of 50 ppm was given – Thinning was practiced with scissors and girdling was done on canes. More and more area in Tasgaon came under cultivation of Thompson seedless. GA was used for the first time and also girdling was practiced for the first time in the decode.

Harvesting: Grape were harvested in cane baskets and the packing of each basket consisted of 10 kg. grapes.

Transportation: Transportation was done with the help of bullock cart, S. T. buses and railways.

Grape cultivation: For increasing the production of grapes, the number of vines were increased to 64 (Tasgaon pandal type). The method developed by vaigyanik Drakshakul Tasgaon was greatly practiced during this decode.

Trailing system: Five wire pandal, use of four eight angles in alternate rows with outside support. Drip irrigation was practiced for the first time in the decode. (1979 – 80)

Cultivation practices: Subcane method came into practice and use of CCC had started. Thiourea, Etherel, Black Bordeaux were used for bud break in October pruning. GA was used in 20 ppm in pre bloom dip in 50% flowering 50 ppm. After using 50 ppm GA in dip, spraying method had started.

Harvesting: During this decade grapes were harvested during sun set

Transportation: Bullock cart, Tempo, Truck, Railway were the means of transportation.

Sales: Kolhapur, Karad, Pune, Nashik, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda, Indore, Jabalpur, Delhi, Bangalore, Madras, Mysore, Culcatta, Shimoga, Coimbatore, In 1974 Sulphur fumigated raisins were prepared. In 1978, they were exported to Dubai by air.

Marketing: Tasgaon Vaigyanik Drakshakul envisaged a unique way of marketing and sales of grapes which involved growers from 10 gunthas to 5 acres within the country to Gulf countries, which included transportation by road, rail and air. A representative of grape growers was present to handle the marketing for that season. This enhanced the sales and in return it fetched good amount to the growers owing to the supply as per demand. In reasonable prices the equipment needed for marketing and production were door delivered to the growers.

Apart from this all the members were given technical guidance at their own vineyards. They were also given financial aid from banks at a proper rate of interest. This type of associated marketing helped in timely repay of the loans. This enhanced the standard of living, status of the growers and this in turn helped in increasing the number of vineyards. Similarly the sale of raisin had also started. The local laborers received 30% more wages and also had work all year long. All the credit of imbibing scientific way of farming into the minds of growers goes to Vaigyanik Drakshakul Tasgaon.

Grape cultivation: Thompson seedless variety was wide spread in all parts of Maharashtra.

Variety: For cultivation of Thompson Seedless, Tas-A-Ganesh, Sonaka and Manik Chaman, use of rootstocks had started. The practice of grafting on rootstock had started.

Spraying:Ridomil & Belaton were imported for the first time. Spraying was done only with HTP Pump initially and later with the help of tractor.

Cultivation practices: CCC, Urasil, 6 BA were used in April, GA-20 ppm was given in 2-3 sprays. An efficient method was developed to see the bud formation on cane with the help of microscope. Use of hydrogen Cyanamide (Dormax) was included in October pruning. Girdling on stem came into practice. Rootstocks also came into use in this decade.

Harvesting: The practice of harvesting at the time of sunset prevailed in the decade.

Packing: 2 kg, 4 kg, 5 kg in corrugated boxes were available.

Transportation: Tempo, Truck, Railway, Aeroplane & Ship were the means of transport.

Sales: Mainly in parts of Southern India, followed by Northern India. Grapes were exported to Dubai by air, similarly grapes were sent to metro cities like Delhi and Calcutta by air. For the first time the grape guard was used and these grapes were sent to Dubai via sea. Raisin production was started at a mass level in this decade. According to Australian way of Raisin production shades were built. Packing – 5 kg. packing in pouch.

Cultivation practices: Use of CPPU and use of soluble fertilizers had started The technology of dissecting the bud and observing under microscope for studying the fruitfulness of buds of fruit pruning.

Harvesting: Use of plastic trays for grape harvesting came into practice. The concept of packing units, pre cooling units and cold storages came into existence.

Packing: 10 kg., 15 kg, 20 kg packing in plastic crate.

Transportation: A. C. Van, Tempo, Truck, Railway and Aeroplane and Ship were the modes of transport. Containers commuted till the vineyards.

Sales: Southern, Northern, Eastern parts of India. Exports had commenced to Dubai, Europe, U. K., Raisin were stored in cold storage & later auctioned by Krishi Uttpanna Bazar Samittee at Tasgaon in Sangli. Raisin packing was available in 12.5 & 15 kg. boxes.

Grape cultivation: Use of reper had started for cultivator of rootstock.

Harvesting: The harvesting was done in plastic crates. Pack house, pre cooling units & storages were established packing of 10 kg., 15 kg., 20 kg. in plastic crates were available for marketing.

Transportation: A.C.Van, Tempo, Truck, Railway, Aeroplane & Ship were the modes of transports.

Sales: Grapes were sold all over India. Dubai, Europe, UK were the places where grapes were exported. Panet packing was introduced for the first time. Auction of raisins started in Pandhapur, Nashik, which were available in 15 kg. boxes.
